Our Valentine's Day

Disgruntled Julie at EthidiumBromide posted about her Valentine's with her hubby, which inspired me to do the same.  She talked about how people were horrified that she was unable to spend Valentine's Day with her husband, more so than she was, and how she thinks of it more as a day about love for your friends than with your SO.

I've always thought the hullaballoo over Valentine's Day was somewhat insane.  Really insane.  Yes, it's a special day to express your love for your SO, but it's become so fraught with extra crap, and people use what happens on Valentine's Day to measure the value of the relationship.  To that I say, I measure the value of *my* relationship based on a weighted history of quality of days going back about a year.  Seriously, doesn't it matter more what a man does for you on the other 364 days of the year than on one arbitrary day?

So I thought I'd just share with you a few things about our V-day.

On Friday, Feb. 13, Mr. Phizz and I are watching TV on the couch in the evening, just chillin'.  A commercial for Walgreen's comes on, advertising that it has all your needs for Valentine's Day.

My dear Mr. Phizz turns to me and says, "Honey, what do you want to do for Valentine's Day?"

I shrug.

Mr. Phizz: "Tell you what, I'll get you anything you want from Walgreen's......on Sunday (day after V-day)."

At that, we laughed and laughed.  He's so funny.  I told him I wanted a big, heart-shaped Whitman's sampler of chocolate.

Then on V-day, we had no plans.  When it became dinner time, it turned out that neither of us felt like cooking and plus we had 2/3 of the ingredients required to make anything anyway, so we decided to go to TGI Friday's.  When we walked in, we felt a little funny - we're not normally Friday's patrons, and the place was packed with lovestruck teenagers.  Suddenly, we're feeling silly.

Fortunately, we got seated in the bar area, where everyone was at least 21, so no shouting, screaming, flirting teenagers were nearby.  We had a nice low-key dinner, and Fridays was giving away free cake for people who ordered 2 entrees, so we split a lovely piece of cake.  With cream cheese frosting, probably my favorite.

All in all, it was super low key.  I love him, he loves me.  And yes, we did have a good Valentine's Day :).

I totally agree - and to add to that: why does Valentine's Day have to be about the man doing something? How about the woman doing something romantic too?

Anyway, sounds like you two had a great VDay - love the fact that Friday's was filled with lovey dovey teenage couples! LOL

We just stayed in, cooked Indian food and watched Wanted (which was terrible! hehe!).

I agree - why does it have to be about the man doing stuff? It is silly. I think what Julie did for her hubby was adorable, wonderful, and inexpensive. That's the kind of stuff that matters.

Sounds like you guys had a nice day too - sometimes, staying in and watching a bad movie with the person you love can be so fun :).

Loved Julie's gift to her hubby - and thanks for the link to her blog! It gives me more reading material :)

"a weighted history of quality of days going back about a year" Hehehe. Love it.

We stayed in and watched quite possibly the least romantic movie ever made. "Seeing Other People." It wasn't even that good. But we also shared our first bottle of wine in months, so all was not lost.

Oh, I've seen that movie!! Is it with Jay Mohr?

It was so messed up, but it was really interesting, wasn't it? I thought it was a very thought-provoking movie.

Sounds great to me! Had Husband been around, I would have loved to do something just like that -- any day that I don't have to cook is a total treat, and frankly, we both work so much and we're so tired that going out somewhere fancy at this point is often more effort than it's worth. We would have been totally happy throwing on jeans and walking up the street for pizza and just hanging out together, because time together is all that matters.

So, did you get your big, heart-shaped Whitman's sampler of chocolate on Sunday?? Or did the brownies last night make up for that instead?

Hahaha, no, no Whitman Sampler, I was kidding about that - and the brownies were more than enough :). More at home right now! Yay!

We just hung out on the sofa and watched the backlog of Daily Show and Colbert Report episodes on our DVD recorder. We ate Szechuan takeout, it was awesome.

We usually avoid Valentines Day (I initially wrote VD - we avoid that too), and celebrate our wedding anniversary and first date anniversary instead. Another couple we know chose an arbitrary date and marked that as their Valentines. No need to spend a fortune on flowers and dinner when you can get the same stuff for a fraction of the price on any other day of the year!
