Seriously though, this is the worst time to be on the job market.
I never thought I would say the words, I wish my PhD would last one year longer (with funding, of course) but right now, those are my sentiments.
It was reported yesterday that it is estimated by the end of the year, one fifth of the unemplyed in Ireland will be graduates. I have no idea what I am going to do for money in a few months. From what I hear, not even temp agencies have spare work.
Yeah, I was working in industry during the dot com bust, and this already seems worse, which I didn't think would be possible. Blech.
Yeah, what you said. But no chainsaws for me please. It's bad enough without that.

Good luck with the job hunt. Sometimes you just have to pick the right company. My company still seems to be hiring at the moment but it is being very picky about what jobs they hire for.
Any chance of picking up sticks and moving outside of the states there are many places needing hot phizzle dizzle card carrying computer science chicks - am sending good thoughts out into the universe for ya!

I've gotten a few more "frozen solids" but maybe things will take a turn for the better at some point. The advice I heard was to start early - it will probably take months, so that's what I'm doing, hopefully things will thaw soon....

I have tried to get my daughter going on looking for a summer job, anything, between semesters. I am sure it is too, too late.

Tom, first, welcome!! Second, re: your daughter, if she is a computer science/engineering type, there are places still hiring interns...but my natural fit companies are not hiring interns at all...so I guess it depends on what she would like to do over the summer. There seems to be a lot of variance through all industries.
Also, my sister was really against summer internships when she was in college, she mostly wanted to go to the beach and often did temp jobs and/or work at places like Old Navy. I was worried it would keep her from getting a permanent job after college, but she is in a good place now and still has a good job despite the times.
